PIRATES ARE READY
FOR THE GAMECOCKS
Spurrier praises East Carolina during
Tuesday's Press Conference.
"They're an offensive bunch. Their defense wasn't that good last
year, but the offense was very good," Spurrier said Tuesday during
his weekly press conference. "Dominique Davis, their quarterback,
will probably own about all the school records after this season. They
play Mike Leach's offense. As we all know, Mike Leach's offense has gone
up and down the field against just about anybody. These guys do an
excellent job with it.
"Our defense will be tested. We've got to have a good pass-rush and
we've got to cover. The ball's going to get out, so we've got to cover
well, break on the ball and so forth. It will certainly be a test for
our pass defense, not only for our third-down defense, which wasn't very
good last year, but our fourth-down defense."
ECU head football coach Ruffin McNeill endured 13 trees that fell in his
yard as a result of Hurricane Irine over the weekend including one that
hit his house, but he says the main focus this week is on "playing
smart football and not do anything to beat yourself."
"South Carolina is a really great football team and you can tell
they've been around a while as a staff," said McNeill, "They
are a group that has all the pieces on all three sides of the football
so our first worry is going to be about ECU and what we do."
McNeill talked about Garcia's ability to do damage "on designed
runs as well as his ability to make all the throws."
"He's got a great target in Jeffries who is a big young man who can
run and catch the football. T.J. Johnson is the centerpiece of an
offensive line that does a great job. Devin Taylor and Stephen Gilmore
are both very athletic on defense."
