The Gamecocks will begin the 2011 SEC
Championship run in less than two weeks. South Carolina has the talent
and the coaching staff to make it to the SEC Championship game for the
second straight season. However, can the Gamecocks execute when it
counts?
Here are Coach Steve Spurrier's comments from the last scrimmage.
"I told our guys today that we're probably an overrated bunch of
dudes right now and an overrated bunch of coaches right now,"
Spurrier said. "We don't look very good. But that's the way it is.
We have two weeks to see if we can learn how to play smart, play with
discipline and play physical."
Three quarterbacks - Stephen
Garcia (3-for-11, 33 yards), Andrew
Clifford (2-for-6, 16 yards) and Dylan
Thompson (1-for-2, 9 yards) combined to complete six passes in 19
attempts for 58 yards.
As for the Gamecocks first opponent East
Carolina, the Pirates have been very productive on offense and that
seems to continue into this season during their last scrimmage
Rio Johnson's 49-yard TD bomb to Lance
Lewis and a 38-yard run by sophomore Michael Dobson highlighted the
early action.
Rio Johnson, Dominique Davis, Brad Wornick Shane Carden combined to go
34-of-45 for 340 yards while linebacker Chris Baker recorded two sacks
for a loss of 15 yards for the defense.
All told ECU tossed up 45 passes, had 34 rushes and 441 yards of total
offense (5.6 yards per play).
Coach McNeill talked about it after the
camp's second full 100 play scrimmage that leads up to Meet the
Pirates night tonight in Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium between 6pm and 8pm.
"I thought we did some really good things again today. The
scrimmage had big plays on both sides of the ball," said McNeill,
"The offense did some special things with long plays and the
defense came up with big stops to create turnovers on downs. I am
anxious to watch the film and see where we are."
Lewis had 82 yards in receiving led the way. Inside receiver Justin
Jones caught five passes for 65 yards to lead all ECU receivers. Inside
receiver Danny Webster Mike Dobson each caught three passes with outside
receiver Mike Price picking up 30 yards on two catches The 17-member
receiving corps averaged exactly ten yards per catch according to ECU.
