OPEN SEASON WITHOUT
QB MITCHELL AND SS COOK
With the 2007
football season kicking off just days away, Coach Spurrier is already having
to replace scheduled starters quarterback Blake Mitchell and strong safety
Emanuel Cook.
USC Athletics Director Eric
Hyman has upheld Mitchell's one-game suspension imposed Thursday for missing
too many classes during the second session of summer school. Redshirt
freshman Chris Smelley will now start and redshirt sophomore Tommy Beecher
will get share playing time against the Ragin' Cajuns.
On top of
that, USC confirmed late Sunday night that sophomore strong safety Emanuel
Cook underwent an appendectomy "over the weekend." and is expected
to be sidelined two to four weeks.
Prior to the surgery, Cook was arrested Thursday night
outside the East Quad dorm along with another man on a charge of unlawfully
possessing a pistol. Cooks spent the night at the Richland County jail
before being released Friday afternoon on a $2,000 personal recognizance
bond and was suspended from the university. He is not allowed to attend
classes or live in student housing. Spurrier told the media Saturday that he
had spoken with Cook to get the sophomore's version of what happened and
that he believed his story
"Hopefully, everyone that's involved in this decision will
be listening and will believe his story also," Spurrier said.
"Hopefully, it's all true. I think it is." Stoney Woodson or Chris
Hampton will start at strong safety in place of Emanuel Cook against
Louisiana-Lafayette Saturday.
PREDICTION
The Gamecocks offense will
sputter early but the defense will keep the Ragin' Cajuns at bay and the
game close thru the first half. South Carolina offense should turn it on in
the second half and come away with an unimpressive victory.
